Private Power Pole Placement & Installation
Why Choose Us?
We Are Experienced & Professionals Level 2 Electricians
Private Power Pole systems are what deliver electricity to a building beyond the main connection point on the street. The property owner is responsible for ensuring that the system runs safely and properly at all times. When issues occur, electrical defect notices will be issued and this is when action needs to be taken immediately.
Situated on a property, a private power pole acts as the electrical source for the building. These private poles are attached to the home through cables and the point of attachment connecting it to the street’s network. While also being able to be shared amongst multiple homes, the private electricity power line allows the electricity to be diverted to any place. More than often, the electricity is provided to the main electrical switchboard where it then can be transmitted to any part of the house.
Why are Private Power Poles Installed?
The main reason why a power pole is installed in properties is to allow people to have the ability to decide where their electricity can be available in their home. Installed at the landowner’s liking, the electric poles then transfer the electricity to the switchboard and then wherever in the building.
Another main reason why installing a private power pole is needed is due to that if the street’s network pole is connected to the home it may be too dangerous. Most cases would be that the cables from the network pole to the home would obstruct trees, walkways and roads. As a result, the private power pole can reduce the number of wires needed. Moreover, this will create a safer environment for the street and properties within.
Lastly, private power poles will need to be installed if existing ones have become too old. This will result in a private power replacement service.
Main Types of Power Poles
There are two main types of private power poles which can be installed onto a property, timber and galvanised/ steel. They both have their positives and negatives which comes with their installation and continued usage. However, in the end, it is up to the homeowner and their personal preference as to which one is installed or replaced.
Timber Private Power Pole
Being made of timber, these electrical private power poles are more expensive than steel. Having a lifespan of 15-30 years or more, this power pole is made to last for longer time periods. Additionally, being made of plywood these power poles are non-conducive and safer for the surrounding area. Longevity as its main focus, these power poles offer a more natural look to the property.
For negatives, these timber poles are more prone to being damaged by termites. This chance increases if living in a coastal area and when active termite mounds are nearby. Moreover, the timber rots more easily if living in an area that is higher in moisture levels. Do know, however, that rain will not cause the timber to mould as the poles are designed to dry quickly. Another negative with timber poles is that they are significantly larger than steel poles. Being larger in diameter and often taller these poles cannot also be designed to suit some buildings. As a result, they are often more noticeable and can be obstructive at times.
Galvanised Steel Power Pole
Galvanised and steel private power poles are increasing in popularity within current times. The steel pole is firstly installed then galvanisation occurs. This process has a coating of protective zinc applied to the pole to prevent rusting. Along with the steel pole, it can be painted to whatever the homeowner would like. Additionally, all the cabling is stored within the pole instead of being exposed. As a result, this type of pole is more aesthetic than the timber poles. Moreover, they are smaller in size and more affordable.
However, once the layer of zinc wears away rust can form and begin to decay the metal. If living in a place near saltwater this process will speed up. Not lasting as long as timber, the average lifespan of galvanised poles is around 12-15 years.
Private Power Pole Placement Safety
When the private power supplies are installed on a property, the homeowner is responsible for many tasks. Including general maintenance, there are multiple different responsibilities which are given to the homeowner, such as:
- Regularly inspect the condition of the pole and the wires
- After extreme weather has occurred, such as storms and heavy winds, making sure there is no damage
- Regular landscaping, including trimming nearby trees, to ensure winds and the vegetation will not ruin the wires/ pole
- Professional inspections, by licensed level 2 electricians, are often carried out for identifying any other damages which untrained people cannot
If unsure on how to perform general maintenance, calling a trained electrician to provide tips/ maintenance is always advised.

Electrical Defect Notices For Private Power Poles
If issues with poles are identified by a power company, such as Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential energy, they will deliver an electrical defect notice to the property. This notice can be issued for a number of reasons including if trees are growing too close to the pole and when there are visible damages present such as decay, termite damage or the pole has fallen. An electrical defect notice will contain a list of actions for a level 2 asp electrician to take with regards to the power pole.
As the private power pole is the homeowner’s responsibility, it will be their responsibility to organise the tasks on the notice. Calling a licensed level 2 electrician is the most effective option to take and should happen as soon as possible. The jobs outlined on the notice will need proper addressing within 21-30 days. If they are not, the main power supply to the building will be shut-off until the repairs are complete
